It is hard to imagine!

Today marks the end to nearly a century of the German government and its people making reparation payments the were part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended the First World War. I was completely unaware that the Germans were still in the process of paying of the damages the allies sought to impose upon the for causing that great conflict. For 92 years the Germans have been paying the Belgians and French. 92 years!!!! I was always under the assumption that the Germans, who stopped making payments in the 1930′s, during the reign of Adolf Hitler, and never resumed those payments. What is even more impressive is the commitment of the German people. There is little question that the Second World War was created as a direct result of the reparation payments and the Versailles Treaty. Many historians would argue that the Second World War would not have occurred had the Versailles Treaty have been different. The economic challenges that existed as a result of the reparations in the 1920s and 1930s in Germany led to the rise of and eventual dictatorship that was led by Hitler. Needless to say a very interesting end to long saga.
